Winston-Salem Dash News Release

WINSTON-SALEM, NC - After game two against the Hickory Crawdads was suspended due to inclement weather Wednesday night, the Winston-Salem Dash were swept in Thursday's doubleheader.

Game 2: Dash 6, Crawdads 10

The Dash got off to a hot start to game two of the series Wednesday night, loading the bases before recording an out. Hickory hurler Larson Kindreich walked in a pair of runs before being pulled from the game. Ivan Gonzalez then knocked a sacrifice fly to drive in Wilfred Veras, giving Winston-Salem an early 3-0 lead.

Hickory responded in the top of the second, plating a trio of runs off Dash righty Andrew Dalquist to knot the score. In the bottom of the frame, Colson Montgomery remained lethal in his return to Winston-Salem, lacing an RBI double to give the Dash a 4-3 lead.

The two innings would be all that Wednesday night allowed as inclement weather forced a suspension of the contest. The game resumed from the third inning on Thursday to kick off a doubleheader.

6-foot-2 righty Manuel Veloz took the mound for Winston-Salem to open the affair after being promoted from Single-A. Veloz looked sharp in his Dash debut, facing the minimum through three innings and striking out two.

In the bottom of the fifth, the Dash tacked on a pair of runs courtesy of another sacrifice fly from Gonzalez and an RBI single from Taishi Nakawake. Veloz surrendered a leadoff triple in the top of the sixth and couldn't escape the jam as Hickory's Yosy Galan knocked an RBI single to pull the Crawdads within 2.

After issuing a one-out walk, Veloz was able to induce an inning-ending double play to maintain Winston-Salem's 6-4 lead. Chase Plymell was next out of the bullpen and ran into some trouble in the seventh.

Plymell gave up an RBI double to Keyber Rodriguez, bringing the go-ahead run to the plate with one out. Hickory's Geisel Cepeda ripped an RBI single to center to tie the game, and the five, six and seven batters came up for the Dash in the bottom of the seventh.

Winston-Salem couldn't cash in, but Plymell tightened up and struck out the side in the top of the eighth. Tristan Stivors came on for the ninth and couldn't keep the lead as Hickory's Max Acosta lined a 2-run double to center field. The Crawdads tacked on another 2 runs off Stivors to extend their lead to 10-6.

The middle of the order couldn't spark a comeback for the Dash in the bottom of the ninth, and the Crawdads took game two of the series, 10-6. Stivors was charged with the loss, and Hickory's Nick Lockhart picked up the win.

Game 3: Dash 2, Crawdads 7

Kohl Simas was on the bump for game two of the doubleheader and immediately ran into trouble. With no outs and runners on first and second, Acosta drilled an RBI single to center to give Hickory an early 1-0 lead.

With a leadoff single in the bottom of the frame, Jacob Burke extended his on-base streak to 43 games, the longest active streak in the minors. Then, with one out and runners on the corners, Loidel Chapelli was able to cross home via wild pitch.

Tim Elko kept the line moving and ripped an RBI single to right to give the Dash a 2-1 lead. Simas again had some difficulties in the second, surrendering a game-tying solo shot to Frainyer Chavez. Then, Tucker Mitchell clubbed a 2-run bomb to left center to give Hickory a 4-2 advantage.

Nothing came to fruition for the Dash in the ensuing four frames, and they managed just two hits in that span. In the top of the seventh, Hickory added 3 runs courtesy of a homer from Abimelec Ortiz.

With the game being shortened to seven innings, Winston-Salem couldn't muster any magic in the bottom of the seventh and fell 7-2. Hickory's Winston Santos went 6.2 innings and picked up the win after giving up two hits, 2 runs and striking out 6.

Simas was tabbed with the loss, his fourth of the year. The Dash are back in action against the Crawdads for game four Friday night. First pitch is set for 7 p.m. from Truist Stadium.
