Winston-Salem Dash News Release
WINSTON-SALEM, NC - Frederick got off to a hot start with three runs in the first inning on Saturday night at BB&T Ballpark and cruised to a 12-0 win against Winston-Salem in front of a sell-out crowd of 5,762. Winston-Salem kept the lead in the Southern Division with Kinston idle, but the advantage shrunk to 1.5 games.
Frederick (25-16, 66-44) responded quickly to Friday's series-opening shutout. With two outs in the first inning, the Keys rallied against Dash starter Matt Wickswat. Manny Machado walked with two outs and moved to second on Aaron Baker's single. Miguel Abreu followed with a single that scored Machado. Mike Flacco then cleared the bases with a double to put the Keys up 3-0 after one.
The Keys kept going offensively, adding a solo home run by Baker in the third inning.
In the fourth, Brian Ward doubled with one out, and advanced to third on a single by Kipp Schutz. With two outs, Jonathan Schoop homered to left to extend the Keys lead to seven.
Former Winston-Salem infielder Dale Mollenhauer walked with two outs in the fifth, and came around to score on right fielder Kyle Colligan's fielding error on a single by Ward.
The Keys continued the offense into the sixth when Steve Bumbry doubled and reached third on a fielding error by center fielder Jared Mitchell. Schoop followed with a single to score Bumbry. Meanwhile, Keys starter Scott Copeland had no problems with the Dash (23-17, 55-55) lineup. He allowed only two hits in his first Carolina League start since his promotion from low-A Delmarva.
The crooked numbers continued in the seventh when Mollenhauer walked and scored on a double by Ward. In the eighth, Flacco added a two-run homer to cap the Keys scoring at 12 runs. When all was said and done, the Keys scored in six consecutive innings from the third until the eighth.
Wickswat (5-2) was hit with the loss, his first since July 3. He gave up eight runs (seven earned) on nine hits in five innings. In his Carolina League debut, Scott Copeland (1-0) got the win in six scoreless innings where he allowed only two hits.
Notes: Winston-Salem tied a season-low with three hits in Saturday's game... Only two nights after the Dash's most lopsided victory, Winston-Salem was handed its biggest lost of the season.
Winston-Salem and Frederick conclude the three-game series on Sunday evening at 5 p.m. at BB&T Ballpark. RHP Cameron Bayne (10-4) is scheduled to throw for Winston opposite Ryohei Tanaka (7-3, 3.07).
