WINSTON-SALEM, NC (May 6, 2012) - The Dash plated a pair of runs in the first and second innings and held on to beat Salem 5-2 and take the deciding game of the series Sunday afternoon at BB&T Ballpark.
Winston-Salem (18-11) scored two unearned runs in the first inning after consecutive errors by the Red Sox allowed Marcus Semien and Carlos Sanchez to reach base. Dan Black brought Semien home with a single for his team-leading 22nd RBI of the season, and Sanchez scored on an RBI groundout by Michael Earley.
Salem (15-13) yielded two more unearned runs after Miguel Gonzalez reached base on a Michael Almanzar error to lead off the second inning. Jake Oester followed with an RBI double to score Gonzalez. The Dash extended the lead to 4-0 on a Sanchez sacrifice fly that plated Oester.
Marcus Semien blasted a solo home run in the seventh to give the Dash a 5-1 lead. Semien pushed his hit streak to 14 games, the longest mark in the Carolina League this season.
Matt Heidenreich (3-1) kept the Red Sox off the scoreboard until the sixth inning when Xander Bogaerts singled home Sean Coyle. Heidenreich exited after five and two-third innings. He allowed one run on six hits and struck out six Salem batters. Chris Bassitt threw two innings of one-run ball before giving way to Leroy Hunt. The Dash closer put two runners on base before striking out Coyle to record his league-leading seventh save of the season.
After an off day Monday, the Dash head on the road for three games against both Frederick and Lynchburg. Right-hander Jake Petricka (2-3, 5.63 ERA) gets the start for Winston-Salem Tuesday night. Frederick sends righty Justin Moore (0-3, 5.96 ERA) to the hill. First pitch is set for 7:00 p.m.
