Winston-Salem Dash News Release

Kinston, NC - Kinston staved off a late Winston-Salem rally and defeated the Dash 9-7 in the series finale on Sunday afternoon at Grainger Stadium. In a marathon contest that lasted three hours and 20 minutes, the two teams combined to use eight pitchers, issue 17 walks and throw four wild pitches. Dash manager Joe McEwing was also ejected in the second inning.

Trailing by three entering the ninth inning, the Dash collected an RBI single by Christian Marrero to cut the Kinston lead to 9-7. But with runners on the corners and one out, Indians closer Josh Judy induced a double play ground ball by Logan Johnson to end the game. It was the third save of the season for Judy with all of them coming against Winston-Salem.

The Dash took advantage of Kinston starting pitcher Ryan Miller, who struggled to locate the strike zone early. Miller hit Christian Marrero with a pitch to start the second inning. The southpaw then walked Logan Johnson and Dale Mollenhauer to load the bases with one out. Jordan Danks hit a ground ball to first that brought Marrero home and a throwing error by the Indians shortstop trying to turn a double play allowed Johnson to score to give Winston-Salem a 2-0 lead.

Kinston cut their deficit in half in the second when they tallied three consecutive hits to start the inning, including an RBI single by Alex Castillo. The Indians would continue the attack against Dash starter Matt Long in the third inning. Roman Pena crushed a three-run home run and Adam Davis contributed an RBI ground out to put Kinston in front 5-2.

Jimmy Gallagher smacked a solo home run in the fifth inning to bring the Dash within two. The homer also extended Gallagher's hitting streak to 10 games, which is the longest streak in the Carolina League this season.

Kinston pulled away in the sixth inning when Cord Phelps and Matt McBride hit back-to-back RBI doubles. Later in the inning, John Allman lined a two-run single to give the Indians a 9-3 lead.

Winston-Salem plated three runs in the seventh inning while registering just one hit. With Kinston reliever Heath Taylor on the mound, the Dash used a leadoff single, two walks, an error and three wild pitches to trim the Indians advantage to 9-6.

Kinston reliever Jonathan Holt allowed a run and a hit in two innings of work to collect the win. Long (0-2) took the loss for Winston-Salem after surrendering five runs on nine hits in four innings of work. He also walked three and struck out while dropping his second consecutive decision to Kinston.

Winston-Salem will continue its 14-game road trip when they open a three-game series at Potomac on Monday night. The Dash will turn to RHP Anthony Carter (1-0, 4.09), while the Nationals are expected to start RHP Erik Arnesen (1-0, 1.80). The first pitch of the opener at Pfiztner Stadium is scheduled for 7 p.m.
