Winston-Salem Dash News Release

Winston-Salem, NC - For Winston-Salem, it was another one-run game and another win over Kinston as the Dash claimed a 3-2 victory over the Indians in the opener of a three-game series on Monday night at Wake Forest Baseball Park. Winston-Salem improved to a league-best 24-11 in one-run games, including five straight wins in such contests.

The Dash has now defeated the K-Tribe in 9 of their last 10 meetings while improving to 7-1 at home against their Southern Division counterpart this season.

First baseman Jimmy Gallagher initiated the scoring in the first inning with a solo shot, his ninth home run of the season, off Kinston starter Paulo Espino. The Dash added a pair of runs in the second inning when designated hitter Logan Johnson and left fielder Tyler Kuhn singled and catcher John Curtis smacked a two-run double to deep center field to give Winston-Salem a 3-0 lead.

Dash starting pitcher Justin Edwards gave up an unearned run in the top of the third on a Lonnie Chisenhall RBI sacrifice fly. An inning later, Cord Phelps hit a line drive back to the mound that caught Edwards on his bare pitching hand. After a handful of warm-up pitches, he was removed from the game for precautionary reasons.

Sergio Santos took over for Edwards and worked two scoreless innings before giving way to Levi Maxwell (4-10), who tossed 2.2 shutout innings to garner the win. Tyson Corley allowed a run in the ninth inning, but induced a game-ending line drive from Tim Fedroff to collect his first Carolina League save.

Espino (3-6), who had won his first two starts against Winston-Salem, finished strong after allowing three runs in the first two innings. He lasted seven frames and surrendered three runs on five hits to suffer the loss even though he retired the last 11 batters he faced.

Winston-Salem and Kinston continue their three-game series with game two on Tuesday night at Wake Forest Baseball Park. The Dash will send LHP Wander Perez (1-1, 3.96) to the mound, while the Indians are expected to start RHP Mike McGuire (0-2, 5.89). The first pitch is scheduled for 7 p.m.
