Myrtle Beach Pelicans News Release

WOODBRIDGE, VA - Offense was the theme of the night Monday at Pfitzner stadium in the series opener between the Pelicans and the Potomac Nationals. Both teams would bat around in the game with Potomac accomplishing that feat twice on their way to a 14-9 rout of the Pelicans.

Potomac broke through against Richard Sullivan in the bottom of the second inning. Michael Burgess was hit by a pitch to begin the inning, and scored a batter later when Chris Marrero doubled him home. Sullivan quickly retired the next three with Potomac leading 1-0.

Off the Pelican starter, the Nationals would go on to put up back-to-back two-run frames over the next two innings. The P-Nats got singles from Michael Martinez and Danny Espinosa to open the third inning. Both scored with two outs on an error charged to Pelican second baseman Robert Marcial. Those runs were unearned, unlike the two in the fourth inning. Martinez provided an RBI single while the second run of the inning scored on an RBI groundout by Espinosa.

The floodgates opened against the bullpen in the sixth. The Nationals scored four runs in the inning that would all go charged to Rudy Darrow. He lasted just two-thirds of an inning, walked two, and allowed three hits. Devin Ivany, Espinosa, Dan Nelson, and Burgess all scored in the inning on separate plays. Five more runs crossed home for Potomac in the seventh to give Potomac a 14-1 advantage. Two of the runs scored on an error at shortstop and two others on a double by Marrerro. Potomac sent nine to the plate in the sixth and sent 10 up in the seventh.

The Pelicans rallied for eight runs over the final two innings including six in the ninth, but still fell short. The inning began with Chris Shehan's second double of the game. He ended up going 2-for-5 with a pair of doubles and runs scored. Donell Linares contributed with a two-run double in the inning. In total the Pelicans sent 10 men to the plate, collected six hits, used a walk and a sacrifice fly. Shehan ended up striking out with a runner at second to end the rally and the game.

Sullivan (2-8) was saddled with the loss going five innings allowing five runs, three earned, on five hits. He walked three and struck out two. Tom Milone earned the win as he allowed just one run over seven innings on six hits.

The series continues Tuesday night at 7:05. Left-hander Cole Rohrbough is expected to start for the Pelicans against Nationals righty Hassan Pena.
