Steel defenseman scores a hat trick
MADISON, WI - The Madison Capitols fell, 6-2, to the Chicago Steel at Bob Suter's Capitol Ice Arena on Saturday night.
Madison (15-15-1-2) is ranked seventh in the Eastern Conference with 33 points. Chicago (18-12-1-2) is ranked second in the Eastern Conference with 39 points.
Defenseman Derek Daschke scored his first of three goals on the night at 17:01 of the second stanza. Daschke stopped a clearing pass at the left point and started skating toward the goal. As he fought off defenders, Daschke flipped a shot toward the net that travelled through traffic and beat the screened goaltender to give the Steel a 3-0 lead.
Right wing Samuel Bucek broke the scoreless tie with his 10th goal of the season at 4:57 of the second period. Center Nick Abruzzese carried the puck behind the Capitols cage from left-to-right and then back again. When Abruzzese returned to the right side of the net, he centered the puck to Bucek in the slot for a one-timer that beat goaltender Joey Lamoreaux on his glove side for a 1-0 lead.
The Steel doubled their lead to 2-0 with left wing Aaro Vidgren's 10th goal of the season at 6:32 of the middle frame. Vidgren intersected a Madison pass at the hash marks and put a quick shot on net that beat Lamoreaux.
Capitols goaltender Dryden McKay replaced Lamoreaux between the pipes following Daschke's first goal.
Daschke picked up his second goal of the game and seventh tally of the season at 19:38 of the second period. Daschke collected a pass at the left point from defenseman Robbie Stucker, and snapped a shot, similar to his last goal, for Chicago's fourth goal of the game.
With six seconds remaining in the second period, defenseman Jared Kucharek put the Capitols on the board with his second tally of the season. Left wing Brendan Walkom won the face-off in the left face-off circle back to Kucharek. The blueliner one-timed the pass, through traffic, and beat goaltender Justin Robbins to bring the score to 4-1.
Capitols left wing Verners Egle cut the Steel lead in half, 4-2, with his sixth goal of the season at 6:22 of the final frame. Egle knocked the puck out of the air in the Capitols zone and skated on a two-on-one break into Steel territory. Egle's wrist shot beat Robbins on his blocker side.
Skating on the power play, Chicago started cycling the puck. Bucek controlled the puck along the left wing half wall and found Vidgren in the right face-off circle. Vidgren wristed a shot over McKay's left shoulder for his 11th goal of the season and a 5-2 score at 13:55 of the third period.
Daschke completed his hat trick with an empty net, shorthanded goal at 16:26 of the final period.
Madison went 0-for-4 on the power play. Chicago was 1-for-4 with the man advantage.
Notables: Madison's 10-game point-streak was snapped... Left wing Verners Egle is on a two-game point streak (1-12).
The Capitols host Team USA at Bob Suter's Capitol Ice Arena for $1 Beer Night on Friday, February 2 with a 7:05 p.m. face-off.
