Danville Otterbots News Release

Burlington, NC- After an hour and 13 minute delay, the Burlington Royals fell to the Danville Braves on Friday night at Burlington Athletic Stadium, 8-3. The Braves scored four runs in the top of the ninth, putting the game out of reach for the Royals, as Greg Ross earns his sixth win of the season, tying him for the league lead. Rudy Brown is dealt his second loss, allowing two runs that gave Danville the advantage.

The Royals scored first when, in the third inning, Anthony Howard led off with his second home run of the year. The solo shot to center field gave the home team a 1-0 lead, but their offense would continue in the inning. After Lane Adams walked with one out, Justin Trapp doubled to center to bring in Adams from first, and give the Royals a two run spread. Trapp would advance to third after Ross threw a pickoff attempt into centerfield, then Michael Antonio grounded out to bring in the runner from third, and give Burlington a 3-0 lead.

The Braves would answer with two runs of their own on a two-RBI triple to left-center by Sam Munson. In the home half, the B-Royals had the bases loaded for Adams, who was called out on strikes to end the threat. Danville took the lead in the sixth when Will Beckwith hit an opposite field home run to make it a 4-3 game. The long ball was his eighth of the year, and gave the visitors a lead they would not give up.

In the top of the ninth, the Braves would tag Andrea Pizziconi for four runs, coming from two singles that scored three runs, and a hit batsman with the bases loaded. The Royals entered their final at bat down by five, and got their first two men on base, but could not mount a comeback, falling 8-3.

Ross pitched six innings for Danville, allowing two earned runs, three overall, on four hits, with three walks and five strikeouts. Dan Winnie threw two innings, allowing just one hit, while Joe Lucas pitched a scoreless ninth, giving up a walk and a hit.

The starter for Burlington, Matt Murray, gave up two runs on four hits in four innings, while striking out five. Brown, who took the loss, threw three innings, surrendering two runs on four hits. Pizziconi allowed four runs on six hits, in two innings of work.

Brandon Drury had four singles, going 4-for-5, with two runs scored. Sam Munson recorded a 3-for-5 night with a game-high, 4 RBI. Homering for his only hit was Beckwith, who went 1-for-3, and scored three runs, while Edison Sanchez was the only Brave not to record a hit.

For the Royals, Derek Hamblen was the only player to record a multi-hit game, going 2-for-4. Four other players had a hit, with Trapp and Jorge Bonifacio each doubling. Kenny Swab and Howard also recorded hits, with Howard's only hit of the night being his solo home run in the third.

These two teams will meet again on Saturday night at Burlington Athletic Stadium. First pitch is set for 7:00, and tickets are available by calling (336) 222-0223.
