Portland Winterhawks News Release
Four points from Luca Cagnoni, three from James Stefan and Nate Danielson's first goal as a Winterhawk highlighted a 5-4 win over the Kelowna Rockets at Prospera Place on Wednesday.
The Winterhawks have recorded points in eight straight games and 13 of their last 14 (12-1-1-0 in that span). They sit at 27-10-2-1 on the year.
Portland opened up a 2-1 lead through 20 minutes on goals from Stefan and Danielson. Stefan struck first, tapping home a rebound from a Gabe Klassen breakaway bid at 5:28. After Trae Johnson leveled the score with a goal for the hosts, Danielson restored the lead with a slick play in front. Cagnoni wired a pass from the blue line to Danielson streaking through the slot, who caught the puck behind his body and pulled it through his skates before putting it home into a yawning cage for his 13th of the year.
The Hawks were on the front foot once more at the start of period two as B.C. native Diego Buttazzoni deflected a Cagnoni shot just 58 seconds into the frame. Max Graham brought the Rockets into the contest once more, but two more Winterhawks goals gave them a three-goal lead through 40 minutes. Another B.C. product, Kyle Chyzowski, potted the first of those, ripping a wrist shot past Jake Pilon at 13:05. Cagnoni soon followed with the eventual game-winner as he fired home a one-timer on a Danielson setup in the final minute of the period.
Kelowna's Tij Iginla cut the deficit to two 5:53 into the third and a late penalty shot goal from Andrew Cristall made things interesting, but the Winterhawks held fast for the 5-4 win.
Nick Avakyan stopped 13 of 17 shots in Portland's win, while Pilon turned aside 32 of 37 for the Rockets.
The Winterhawks now head north to Prince George for back-to-back battles with the B.C. Division-leading Cougars on Friday and Saturday.
