December 1, 2004 - Major League Soccer (MLS)
FC Dallas News Release

New York, NY – Soccer United Marketing (SUM) announced today that Phoenix, Los Angeles, San Antonio, Dallas and San Jose will join Houston, the host city for the finals, as the six venues for the 2005 edition of InterLiga™, the qualifying tournament that will determine two automatic berths for Mexican clubs to the Copa Libertadores, considered one of the top international club competitions in the world. The Federacion Mexicana de Futbol will announce groups and matchups in the coming days.

The eight-team InterLiga™ tournament is scheduled to kick off in Phoenix and Los Angeles on Sunday, January 2 with doubleheaders at Bank One Ballpark in Arizona and at The Home Depot Center (in Carson, California just outside of Los Angeles). The tournament moves to Spartan Stadium in San Jose on Wednesday, January 5 and to the Alamodome in San Antonio on Thursday, January 6. The second weekend of InterLiga™ then begins with a return to Carson and a doubleheader at The Home Depot Center on January 8 followed by a doubleheader at the Cotton Bowl in Dallas on Sunday, January 9. InterLiga™ then comes to a close in Houston's Reliant Stadium on Wednesday, January 12 with the final doubleheader which will determine the qualifiers to the Copa Libertadores.

The eight teams participating in InterLiga™ 2005 were selected based on their combined record in the 2003 Apertura and 2004 Clausura seasons of the Mexican domestic league. The top eight squads are: Club America, Atlante, CD Guadalajara, Jaguares, Santos, Tigres, Toluca and Monterrey. Monterrey qualified to InterLiga™ 2005 after losing a playoff series to Pachuca.

Should either Atlante or Monterrey, the only two InterLiga™ qualifiers in the current Mexican League semifinals, capture the Apertura 2004 title the weekend of December 11, Necaxa would be the next club in line to replace either of them. The Mexican League champions would be required to participate in the CONCACAF Champions Cup, precluding their participation in the Copa Libertadores and InterLiga.

Sunday, January 9, 2005 – Cotton Bowl (Dallas, Texas) – Doubleheader at 4 & 6:30 p.m.

FC Dallas, a charter member club of Major League Soccer, will begin play in the new 21,193 seat soccer stadium in the spring of 2005. The 117-acre facility will be located at the intersection of Main Street and Dallas North Tollway in Frisco.
