Dallas Sidekicks News Release
ALLEN, Texas (Aug 11, 2014) Dallas Sidekicks owner Ronnie Davis has announced that veteran defenseman Nick Stavrou will step down from the pitch and join his staff as the director of soccer operations, effective immediately. Stavrou, who spent 14 seasons as a leader and standout on the team, will assist the Sidekicks coaching staff with day-to-day operations on and off the field including recruitment, player-personnel decisions, game-day preparations and camps.
"We are very excited to have Nick on our staff this year. We will miss him on the field, but I'm confident that his experience and leadership will benefit our players and organization tremendously," Davis said. "He knows the game and what it takes to win and manage a successful team."
Stavrou was acquired in the 1991 MSL draft, a 2nd round (10th overall) pick from Cleveland State University. At the end of last season, he was one of only two players still ac tive who competed in the original Major Indoor Soccer League. In his 14 years with the Sidekicks, Stavrou amassed 395 points in 332 regular season games. He helped the team win league championships in 1993, 1998 and 2001.
"Nick is a very special player and has always been a great leader," Sidekicks head coach and Stavrou's former teammate Tatu said. "Throughout the years he has always dedicated 100 percent to this organization, and I know that will carry through to his new role."
Stavrou was one of the first players to recommit to the Sidekicks when the team resurfaced after an eight-year hiatus in 2012. The Worthing, England native remained in Dallas during that hiatus, building his name as a highly decorated coach for Solar Soccer Club.
"I'm honored to continue working with an organization that has been such a big part of my life for so many years," Stavrou said."We have something special here in Dallas. It's a very tight-knit group. I will definitely miss being on the pitch, but I'm looking forward to getting started in this new role and make a positive difference."
The Sidekicks will open their season at home on Saturday, October 25 at the Allen Event Center in the inaugural match of the Major Arena Soccer League. Dallas will face the 2013 MISL champion Missouri Comets in a match that is scheduled to kick off at 7:00 p.m. Tickets are now on sale.
