Oshawa Generals News Release
Former Generals defenceman, Dakota Mermis, has signed a three year entry-level contract with the Arizona Coyotes.
Mermis spent half of his last OHL season as an overager with the Generals. He was aquired just before the deadline in January 2015 from the London Knights and played a large role on defence for the Generals, shutting down top guys throughout the 2015 playoffs and in the Memorial Cup. He registered 66 points (13 goals, 53 assists) in 159 games played in the OHL. He also added 15 points in 21 contests during the 2015 playoffs.
"We're extremely happy Dakota has been given this opportunity,"says Oshawa Generals General Manager and vice-President, Roger Hunt. "He came to Oshawa to win a championship and sign an NHL contract. He did both and we are very proud of him. We wish him all the best with Arizona."
Following three seasons playing in the United States Hockey League (USHL), Mermis played for the University of Denver, which is part of NCAA Division 1 hockey. He played 19 games for the university before entering the OHL to play for the Knights in the 2012-13 season.
