Hickory Crawdads News Release

HAGERSTOWN, MD - The 1st-Half Northern Division Champion Hickory Crawdads completed their third consecutive series win with the 5-3 victory against the Hagerstown Suns before 1,087 fans at Municipal Stadium on Thursday night.

The Crawdads (74-53, 34-25) again jumped in front in the first inning, striking for a run against RHP Matt Swynenberg (L, 6-3). With two away, SS Jurickson Profar extended the frame with a double, before racing in quickly on an RBI double by 3B Christian Villanueva for the 1-0 lead.

The Suns (72-57, 32-27) came right back with a run of their own in the bottom of the first against RHP Cody Buckel (W, 8-3). CF Chris Curran and SS Blake Kelso started the frame with back-to-back singles. Buckel got 2B Adrian Sanchez to ground into a doubleplay, but Curran managed to score on the play, tying the game at 1-1.

Hickory responded with three runs in the top of the second to move right back in front. RF Josh Richmond and LF Jonathan Roof knocked consecutive singles, and 1B Jhonny Gomez followed one out later with a base hit to load the bases. During CF Jake Skole's at-bat, C Adrian Nieto attempted a snap throw pick off to third, but fired the ball into left field, enabling all three runners to move up and Richmond to score. Roof then streaked home on a wild pitch, before Skole bounced an RBI infield single up the middle to plate Gomez for the 4-1 advantage.

Hagerstown kept it close with two tallies in the bottom of the second. Nieto worked a one-out walk and moved to third on a LF Mills Rogers double. 3B Justino Cuevas scored both runners with a two-run single that cut the Crawdads lead down to 4-3.

The 'Dads put the finishing offensive touch on the win with a solo home run by C Kellin Deglan in the top of the seventh, stretching the lead back to multiple runs, 5-3.

Buckel finished his five-inning outing with his final three innings tossed in scoreless fashion, striking out eight batters overall in the start. RHP Joe Van Meter logged two scoreless relief innings, before RHP Ben Rowen dealt the eighth and RHP Francisco Mendoza (S, 6) closed the 5-3 win for Hickory with a scoreless ninth.
