Augusta GreenJackets News Release
Augusta, GA - In the fourth straight one-run game of the series between the Augusta GreenJackets and the Kannapolis Intimidators, the GreenJackets had just enough offense to squeak by the Intimidators in a 2-1 win on Thursday night. With the win, the GreenJackets earned the series split, finished a 5-3 homestand and moved into a share of first place in the Southern Division thanks to Savannah's loss earlier Thursday evening.
After Kannapolis grabbed a 1-0 lead on a wild pitch by Augusta starter Taylor Rogers in the second inning, Rogers buckled down and delivered a solid outing in his fourth straight win. Rogers allowed two hits and walked two in the second, but stranded the bases full on a big strikeout of Keenyn Walker. That strikeout started a run where Rogers retired seven in a row and 12 of the final 14 he faced.
Rogers (11-9) allowed one run on two hits and two walks in six innings, striking out five. In his last four starts - all wins - Rogers has allowed just three earned runs on 14 hits in 27 innings.
The GreenJackets tied the game in the bottom of the second on an RBI groundout by Devin Harris and took their 2-1 lead in the fourth when Harris beat out a double play ball at first that allowed Bobby Haney to score the go-ahead run. The bullpen nailed things down for the GreenJackets after Rogers left as Jose Valdez, Seth Rosin and Brett Bochy retired nine of the game's final ten hitters to preserve the two-hit masterpiece. Bochy's perfect ninth earned him his eighth save of the season.
Augusta had chances to add more runs, but they stranded seven and left the bases loaded for the fifth time in the series. Bobby Haney's three-hit night paced a nine-hit GreenJackets attack.
Spencer Arroyo (9-9) took the loss for Kannapolis, allowing two runs on nine hits and a pair of walks while striking out one in his seven innings of work.
Leaving town on Friday with a share of first place, the GreenJackets hit the road for the final time this season to open a five-game series with the Greenville Drive. Augusta sends Mike Kickham (5-8, 4.18) to the mound in the opener to face Drive righty Brandon Workman (4-7, 3.95). First pitch from Greenville comes at 7:05 p.m. with radio pregame coverage beginning at 6:50, airing on WRDW-AM 1630 and online at www.greenjacketsbaseball.com .
Single-game tickets for any GreenJackets home game are currently available by calling the GreenJackets front office at 706-922-WINS while further information can be found online at www.greenjacketsbaseball.com .
