Hickory Crawdads News Release

HICKORY, NC - The Hickory Crawdads jumped in front with five runs in the bottom of the first inning and never looked back, cruising to the 11-5 win against the Greensboro Grasshoppers, before 1,966 fans at L.P. Frans Stadium on Saturday. DH Jorge Alfaro (five RBIs) and 2B Alejandro Selen (four RBIs) combined to drive in nine runs for Hickory.

The 'Dads (3-0, 39-33) first-inning rally was made possible by a two-out throwing error by 3B Josh Adams, enabling 2B Rougned Odor to reach base and extend the inning. RF Jeremy Williams was then hit by a pitch from RHP Josh Hodges (L, 5-5), before 3B Drew Robinson worked a walk to load the bases. Alfaro then got the 'Dads on the board with a two-run single, followed by a three-run homer by Selen to make it 5-0.

After a solo home run by CF John Schultz in the top of the third got the Grasshoppers (0-3, 46-27) on the board, Hickory tacked on three more runs in the bottom of the third. Back-to-back singles by Williams and Robinson started the inning. Alfaro and Selen then both struck again with an RBI single and an RBI double, respectively, stretching the lead to 7-1. One out later, 1B Jhonny Gomez plated Alfaro from third with an RBI grounder, making it 8-1.

Greensboro edged a little closer with a tally in the top of the fourth inning. RF Ryan McIntyre singled and then raced home on an RBI double by LF Aaron Senne, cutting the 'Dads lead to 8-2. Eickhoff, though, kept the Grasshoppers from coming any closer, surrendering only the two runs through six total innings of work.

The 'Dads wasted no time stretching the lead right back out with three runs in the bottom of the fourth. With one down, Odor blasted a solo home run over the right field wall. One out later, Robinson singled his way on, before trotting in on a two-run shot by Alfaro, increasing the Hickory advantage to 11-2.

The Grasshoppers attempted to get back in the game with three runs in the top of the seventh inning against RHP Daniel Lopez. SS Terrence Dayleg started the stanza with a single. After a base hit by Schultz, 2B Ryan Goetz drove an RBI single to score Dayleg. DH Matt Smith worked a walk to load the bases, leading to an RBI sacrifice fly by 3B Josh Adams. The final run came in on an RBI ground out from 1B Ryan Rieger, chipping the deficit to 11-5.

However, Lopez escaped the remainder of the seventh inning with no further damage being done, before logging a scoreless eighth. RHP Chance Sossamon slammed the door on the 'Hoppers with a 1-2-3 ninth, closing the 11-5 win for Hickory.
