Idaho Falls Chukars News Release

The Idaho Falls Chukars seem to be caught in a Groundhogs Day effect as the club was once again roughed up by the Casper Ghosts Monday night, losing 11-6 and completing and Ghosts 4-game sweep from Mike Lansing Field.

Coming off loses of 14-2, 7-4, and 8-2, the Chukars once again fell behind early and hurt themselves by handing out a plethora of extra bases to the Ghosts. Despite out hitting Casper 10-8, the Chukars pitching staff hurt themselves by walking seven batters, throwing four wild pitches, and hitting three batters. The pitching staff also received another mistake filled game from their defense, as the Chukars committed three more errors resulting in two unearned runs.

In a mirror image of Saturday night's loss, Idaho Falls actually jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the top of the first, thanks to three straight singles from Luis Piterson, Daniel Mateo and Dean Espy, with Espy's knock driving in Piterson. In the bottom of the inning however, Casper struck for four runs, three earned, on three hits to take a 4-1 lead they would never relinquish.

After the Ghosts plated another run in the third and two more in the fourth to go up 7-1, the Chukars would temporarily get back in the game thanks to a 2-RBI single by Mark Threlkeld in the sixth to make the score 7-3.

The 4-run deficit would be short lived however, as Casper pounced on Idaho Falls for four more runs in the seventh to pull away 11-3. The Chukars would plate a run in the eighth and two in the ninth to finish the scoring at 11-6.

Threlkeld finished the night as one of only two Chukars with a multi-hit game, going 2-4 with 3 RBI. The Ghosts meanwhile were paced on offense by second baseman Sam Mende who went 1-3 with a 2-run home run and 3 total RBI.

On the mound, Idaho Fall starter Willian Avinazar (0-2) took the loss after allowing five runs, four earned over his three innings pitched. Casper starter Danny Winkler (3-1) earned the win after holding the Chukars to three runs, one earned over his 5.1 frames.

With the loss the Chukars (2-7) have now lost four in a row, and trail the division leading Ghosts (8-1) by six games.

The Chukars and Ghosts will now both travel to Idaho Falls to start a 3-game series Tuesday night, with first pitch scheduled for 7:15 p.m.
