Lakeland, FL - Following a rain delay of an hour and 31 minutes, the Lakeland Flying Tigers defeated the Dunedin Blue Jays on Thursday night at Joker Marchant Stadium, 4-1.

The Flying Tigers picked up single runs in the second and fourth innings before the D-Jays cut the lead in half in the fifth. Derrick Loveless reached on an error to open the inning and advanced to second on Dickie Joe Thon's ground out to second. Boomer Collins followed with an RBI double down the left field line. It ended up being the only damage the D-Jays would do, however.

Jeremy Gabryszwski (8-7) struck out six for a second consecutive outing, but the Dunedin right-hander gave up 10 hits and four runs in five innings and suffered the loss. The big blow came in the fifth when Ben Verlander hit a two-out two-run homer to extend Lakeland's lead. Gabryszwski gave up a leadoff double to Javier Betancourt, but retired the next two hitters in order. He then fell behind 2-0 to Verlander, who deposited his fourth long ball of the season onto the berm over the left field wall.

Brady Dragmire and Chris Smith combined to throw three shutout innings out of the Dunedin bullpen, striking out three. Endrys Briceno (1-2) allowed just three hits and one run over five innings to earn his first win with Lakeland. Tyler Ford tossed three shutout innings and fanned four. Whit Mayberry picked up his first save with a 1-2-3 ninth.

The series continues with game two tomorrow night at Joker Marchant Stadium in Lakeland. Right-hander Brad Allen will take the hill for the D-Jays. First pitch is set for 6:30 ET and the action can be heard on DunedinBlueJays.com.
