D.C. United News Release
CHANTILLY, Va. (February 3, 2004) - United for D.C. announced today the first of three book distribution events to be held in 2004 as a part of the United Reads initiative. This season, Payne Elementary School (Ward 6) is joined by Smothers Elementary School (Ward 7) as distribution outlets for United Reads and the United RIF School program. D.C. United players and staff will visit Payne Elementary on Wednesday, Feb. 4th and Smothers Elementary on Thursday, Feb. 5th. Wednesday's event will begin at 2:00 p.m. while Thursday's activity will kick-off at 1:30 p.m. Both assemblies will include a book distribution, where students will select a book of their choice to add to their personal libraries, soccer demonstrations and a series of guest readers for each grade.
"United for D.C. is very excited to be supporting the Reading Is Fundamental program at Payne Elementary School yet again, as well as to be expanding the United RIF School initiative to include a new partner school, Smothers Elementary," said Catherine Marquette, Executive Director of United for D.C. and D.C. United Director of Community and Fan Relations. "By establishing these elementary schools as United RIF Schools under our overall United Reads banner program, we hope to be able to instill in these students a love of reading and book ownership, while at the same time developing a love of soccer."
Students at these United RIF Schools are also beneficiaries of the Kicks for Kids program. Through the assistance of several community-minded organizations in the Washington, D.C. area, students and their families will be able to attend a 2004 D.C. United match free-of-charge.
