D.C. United News Release
Washington, D.C. (September 25, 2006) - After four MLS Cup championships, two Supporter Shields, a U.S. Open Cup title and two international trophies, D.C. United fans have had a lot to celebrate over the last ten years. Beginning today, United will reach out to its supporters to determine which are the best, as fans will be able to vote via dcunited.com on the Decade's Best saves, goals and moments. Voting runs through Friday, October 6, with the results being announced the following day.
"Our supporters will have a tough time judging between so many great memories," said United Sr. Vice President Stephen Zack. "While we are in the midst of another great season, it is great to take some time to reflect on these wonderful events. I'm looking forward to seeing the results of the voting."
Judging will not be an easy process a host of impressive events are being presented to voters. Was Nick Rimando's game-winning save in sudden death penalty kicks against New England in the 2004 Eastern Conference Final or Tom Presthus' diving stop in the waning moments of the 1999 Eastern Conference Finals the best in club history? Eddie Pope scored two important goals in international competitions in 1998 and gave United its first-ever MLS Cup trophy with an overtime header in 1996. Will one of his goals go down as the best in United history or was the team's best goal scored by United legend Marco Etcheverry or 100-goal club member Jaime Moreno?
Several other moments in United history also await the voters. D.C. United achieved the first ever "double" in U.S. soccer history in 1996 when they followed up their MLS Cup triumph by winning the U.S. Open Cup. In 1998, the team won the CONCACAF Champions Cup and InterAmerican Cup to stake its claim as "Champions of the Americas." Where were you when Freddy Adu made his MLS debut with the Black-and-Red on April 3, 2004, becoming the youngest player ever to play in a League game at the age of 14? Could any of these moments top the formation of D.C. United in 1994?
The Decade's Best is left solely to the discretion of the best fans in the League - vote today!
