D.C. United News Release
WASHINGTON, DC - D.C. United announced today the signing of Francis Doe. The Liberian striker will be available for selection pending receipt of his P-1 visa. D.C. United acquired Doe's playing rights after the forward was waived by New York on February 21, 2008. Per team and League policy, terms of the deal will not be released.
"We are excited about the prospects for Francis," said United General Manager Dave Kasper. "He is a dynamic, young player who will compete for playing time on our front line."
At 22, Doe has a lengthy resume, having played professionally in Greece, Ghana, Cameroon and the United States. While playing in the Cameroonian league in 2002 for Tonnerre Yaoundé, Doe was voted best foreign player and third best overall player. That same year Doe also led the club to the CAF Cup final, netting six goals in eight CAF Cup matches. The striker ended the 2002 season scoring twelve goals in seventeen matches in all competitions. In 2004, Doe moved to the United Soccer League's Minnesota Thunder, before agreeing to terms on a two-year deal with Greek club Atromitos. He went on to tally six goals in twenty league matches his first season at the club. With the club, he appeared in the 2006 UEFA Cup against Sevilla of Spain's La Liga.
In 2007, Doe returned stateside and signed with the New York Red Bulls on August 25. He scored his first MLS goal and tallied an assist in a 2-2 draw versus the New England Revolution on September 22. He finished the season with two goals and one assist in helping the club qualify for the MLS playoffs. Doe started the club's first playoff game against the New England Revolution, logging 68 minutes in a 0-0 draw, but was unable to play in the second leg due to injury.
Doe represented Liberia in the qualifying round of the 2006 World Cup and the 2008 African Cup of Nations qualifying stage, scoring two goals in the latter. He opened the scoring in a 3-2 victory over Rwanda on October 8, 2006. On March 28, 2007 Doe returned to Yaoundé to face Cameroon, scoring the lone goal for Liberia in a 3-1 loss.
