D.C. United Signs Defender Rodrigo Brasesco

Washington, D.C. (January 10, 2011) - D.C. United announced today that the club has signed 24-year-old defender Rodrigo Brasesco. Brasesco comes to the Black-and-Red on loan from Racing Club, where he has played the past two years in the Uruguayan Primera Division. A native of Montevideo, Brasesco is the first Uruguayan to join D.C. United. He will be available pending receipt of his P-1 Visa and his International Transfer Certificate.

"Rodrigo is a young player, but at the same time he is bringing a lot of experience to our club," said Head Coach Ben Olsen. "He's played in some very important matches in Uruguay and in South American competition, and he gives us another good option in the back."

"Rodrigo is strong and tenacious defender who can play in central or right side defense," said General Manager Dave Kasper. "We are excited to have conclude a deal to bring him to D.C. United."

Brasesco has featured prominently for Racing over the past two seasons, helping his team to the top of the Primera Division in the most recent Apertura, starting all 15 league matches. During the 2009-2010 campaign, Brasesco featured in 24 matches (23 starts) in 2,106 minutes of play.

The defender performed particularly well in the Copa Libertadores in 2010, South America's premier club football competition. In this tournament, Brasesco played in every Copa Libertadores match, helping Racing advance out of the qualifying rounds and into the group stage against clubs like Brazil's Corinthians and Independiente Medellin of Colombia. In total Brasesco played in eight Copa Libertadores matches.

Prior to joining Racing Club in 2008, Brasesco advanced through the ranks of Uruguayan Second Division side Instituci�n Atlética Sud América. From 2004 through 2008 Brasesco played for the small Montevideo club.
