WASHINGTON, D.C. - D.C. United have signed defender Michael DeShields after selecting the Wake Forest University standout with the fifth overall pick in the 2021 MLS SuperDraft presented by adidas on Jan. 21.
"Michael impressed us with his physicality, athleticism, and composure on the ball during his time with Wake Forest," Dave Kasper, D.C. United General Manager and VP of Soccer Operations, said. "We are adding important depth at center back and we're excited that we were able to acquire someone of Michael's pedigree in the draft. We are looking forward to welcoming Michael to the District."
DeShields scored three goals and recorded an assist in 60 appearances for the Wake Forest Deacons from 2017 to 2019. The Baltimore native joined New England Revolution II in the USL League One on Nov. 30, 2020, but did not appear for the side.
