Tonight's victory marks the third win by United in this year's U.S. Open Cup. The Black-and-Red advanced to the tournament semifinal by defeating the Chicago Fire 2-1 in extra time on July 8 at the Maryland Soccerplex. The club defeated the Rochester Rhinos (USL-1) at the same venue June 1. Charleston advanced to the finals with wins over the ASC New Stars (USASA), the Charlotte Eagles (USL-2), the Houston Dynamo, FC Dallas and the Seattle Sounders (USL-1). D.C. United and Charleston have met twice previously in U.S. Open Cup play. The Battery scored a 4-3 upset overtime victory in South Carolina in a third round match on August 8, 1999. United returned to Blackbaud Stadium for a second round fixture the following year, defeating Charleston 4-0 on June 14, 2000.
The Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup is an annual national competition that is open to all amateur and professional soccer teams that are affiliated with U.S. Soccer. It is the oldest tournament in the U.S., beginning in 1914 when Brooklyn Field Club took home the very first title. MLS teams were first included in the tournament in the inaugural 1996 season, with D.C. United taking home the title. The champion of this year's event will garner a bid to participate in the 2009-2010 CONCACAF Champions' League.
