D.C. United News Release
CHANTILLY, VA (March 24, 2004) - D.C. United announced today the schedule for the 2004 United Drives for D.C. initiative. United Drives for D.C., in its fourth year, benefits worthwhile non-profit organizations by collecting much-needed items to help with each beneficiary's mission. This initiative designates a different charity drive for each month of the 2004 regular season, ranging from the collection of soccer equipment to canned food to children's books to school supplies.
"We are pleased to yet again be able to provide this valuable service to the Washington, D.C. community and our partner organizations," said Catherine Marquette, D.C. United's Director of Community & Fan Relations and Executive Director of United for D.C. "It is our hope that everyone involved with D.C. United â players, staff and fans â will get involved to help make this our most successful year yet."
Each month during the 2004 Major League Soccer season, D.C. United will collect items at each United home match to benefit D.C. area non-profit organizations. D.C. United will collect items outside of Gate A, and fans who donate an item will receive a commemorative key chain and a "Buy One, Get One" ticket voucher good for any D.C. United regular season home game. Beneficiary organizations for 2004 include DC SCORES, the Latin American Youth Center (LAYC), Martha's Table, the Capital Area Food Bank, United for D.C., the Children's National Medical Center, the Wireless Foundation, and the Dinner Program for Homeless Women.
To kick off the initiative, D.C. United will collect new and gently used soccer cleats and equipment to benefit DC SCORES and the LAYC at its April 2004 games (Saturday, April 3rd and Saturday, April 24th). DC SCORES combines soccer and creative writing in an after-school program that exists in 21 D.C. public elementary schools. The LAYC is a non-profit youth and family development center in Washington, D.C. that serves at-risk immigrant Latino youth, focusing on academics, substance abuse prevention, arts and recreation.
