D.C. United Kicks Off Charity Drives Series

CHANTILLY, VA (May 2, 2003) - D.C. United begins the third year of its charitable drives program, United Drives for D.C., this Saturday, May 3rd, when it collects new, unwrapped toys to benefit Children's National Medical Center. The event will take place beginning at 6:00 p.m. at RFK Stadium and will continue until the kick-off of D.C. United's match against the Dallas Burn at 7:30 p.m. The toy drive is the first of many charity drives that will take place during the 2003 season at select D.C. United home games.

"D.C. United is pleased to be able to continue its annual United Drives for D.C. initiative," said United Director of Community and Fan Relations, Catherine Marquette. "Our goal by implementing this program is not only to collect much-needed items to donate to community-based organizations but also to remind our fans of the need to invest in and give back to the community.

In addition to this initial drive of the season, D.C. United has also announced the dates of the other drives within the United Drives for D.C. program. On Saturday, June 7th, D.C. United will be collecting canned food and other non-perishable food items to benefit the Capital Area Food Bank as part of the National Hunger Awareness Day initiative (June 5th). D.C. United will collect new or gently used soccer equipment on Saturday, June 21st as part of the US Soccer Foundation's "Passback Program" to benefit local soccer-related organizations such as DC SCORES and Special Olympics of the District of Columbia.

On Saturday, August 9th, D.C. United will collect new children's books to benefit its charitable arm, United for D.C., and its United RIF (Reading Is Fundamental) School program, which will have expanded to include four schools for the 2003-2004 school year. At all September home games (Saturday the 6th, Saturday the 13th and Sunday the 28th), D.C. United will collect school supplies to also benefit United for D.C. and the United RIF School initiative. D.C. United will conduct its final charity drives of the regular season on Sunday, October 19th, when it will collect coats to benefit a local shelter.

Collection points for all drives will be set up outside of RFK Stadium's Main Gate and Gate A as well as within Soccer Celebration, located in parking lot number eight. Fans who donate to the drives will receive a "United Drives for D.C." key chain and a special "buy one, get one free" coupon for any regular season game as a thank you for their contributions.
