D.C. United Drives School Supplies

CHANTILLY, VA (September 2, 2003) - D.C. United extends its United Drives for D.C. series during the entire month of September as it collects new school supplies at each home match to benefit United for D.C. and the charity's United Reading Is Fundamental (RIF) School program. The extended three-part collection on September 6th, September 13th and September 28th will benefit the students at Payne Elementary School (ward 6) and Smothers Elementary School (ward 7), both United RIF Schools.

"D.C. United is pleased to be able to support area students as they head back to school by collecting necessary supplies such as pens, pencils, notebooks and more," said United Director of Community & Fan Relations and United for D.C. Executive Director Catherine Marquette. "By extending the drive throughout the entire month of September, we hope and expect to have the highest participation levels from our fans all year, better enabling us to distribute these supplies to the 550 students at Payne and Smothers.

The United RIF School program was launched in October of 2002 and provides children at affiliated schools the opportunity to develop their own personal libraries throughout the school year during three RIF book distributions. The program is enhanced with player and coach assemblies and clinics in conjunction with the distributions.

School supplies are one of seven items collected during the 2003 season as part of the United Drives for D.C. series. Collection points for the United School Supply Drive will be set up outside of Gate A and the Main Gate of RFK Stadium and Soccer Celebration located in parking lot 8. Collection bins will be set up no later then two hours prior to kickoff, and those who participate will receive a back-to-school folder, a buy-one-get-one-free coupon for any remaining regular season home game and a United Drives for D.C. key chain.
