D.C. United News Release
CHANTILLY, VA (March 20, 2003) - D.C. United announced today that Radio America (WACA 1540 AM) has been named the club's official Spanish-language radio partner for the 2003 season, the sixth season the popular station will carry United matches. As part of the agreement, all 30 United regular season games will be broadcast live on Radio America, as well as on Radio Fiesta 1480 AM and Latino-Mix 1350 AM. Radio America can be heard over the internet at www.radioamerica.net.
"The Hispanic fans in our market have been loyal and passionate supporters of D.C. United since day one," said United Senior Vice President & General Manager Stephen Zack. "We are very pleased to again partner with Radio America to create this unique partnership and expand our coverage of D.C. United broadcasts in the Washington metropolitan area and make our matches available to our Hispanic fans in their native language."
"To have more Hispanic radio stations carry our signal during the broadcasts of D.C. United games is really fantastic," added Radio America President, Alejandro Carrasco. "This year we were able to put together the very first Latino radio network for a soccer team in MLS. I am elated that Radio America's broadcasts of D.C. United games will be heard on three Hispanic radio stations. We are so excited about this partnership that we are already exploring the possibilities of expanding the network next year."
Radio personality Danilo Noel Dirón, a native of Uruguay who hosts "La Mesa Redonda del Fútbol" (Round Table), a daily soccer-only show, will again be the primary personality on WACA's United broadcasts, providing the color commentary. Dirón will be joined in the booth by long-time Washington area broadcasting fixture and El Salvador native Herbert Baires, who will handle the play-by-play duties for the fifth consecutive season. Wilson Romero, a compatriot of Baires and a panelist on La Mesa Redonda del Fútbol, will be the sideline reporter.
