 D.C. United News Release
CHANTILLY, VA (August 23, 2003) - D.C. United today announced the acquisition of former Columbus Crew midfielder Trevor Perea. The 22-year-old Perea was claimed from waivers and will be classified as a developmental player on United's 24-man roster. The Black-and-Red now have the full compliment of 24 players, but will have a roster opening should Bobby Convey successfully receive his English work permit and join Tottenham Hotspur of the English Premier League. The club is currently using only two of the allotted three Senior International spaces. Parea will join United in San Jose today and will be available for selection in tomorrow's match against the Earthquakes and in next week's U.S Open Cup match against the Wilmington Hammerheads.
"We are pleased to be adding Trevor to our roster as a developmental player," said United Technical Director Dave Kasper. "He is a skillful midfielder and we look forward to working with him.
Columbus signed Perea to a developmental contract in March of 2003 after being invited to play in their preseason matches. Perea made one appearance for the Crew, making his MLS debut in a 3-0 loss against D.C. United on June 14th at RFK Stadium. He came on for Brian Maisonneuve and played the last 34 minutes of the match.
Perea, a native of Dallas, had a standout career at Duke University. During his senior year, he tallied a season high four goals and finished his college career with a total of 12 goals and 23 assists. In 1999 and 2000, Perea played for the United States U-20 national team, was named to the ACC All-Tournament team and awarded second team All-ACC honors. He also was selected to the Perkins/Adidas Classic All-Tournament team in 2001.
