D.C. United News Release
WASHINGTON - D.C. United have acquired midfielder Marcelo Sarvas from the Colorado Rapids in exchange for Targeted Allocation Money and a 2018 conditional SuperDraft pick.
A four-year MLS veteran, Sarvas has played in 113 career MLS matches, starting 101. The Brazilian midfielder played in 25 matches for the Rapids in 2015, his first season in Colorado. After knee surgery in April forced him to miss the first seven games of the campaign, he started 21 times, scoring two goals and adding one assist. "Marcelo brings MLS experience and a veteran presence to our group," Dave Kasper, United General Manager and VP of Soccer Operations, said. "He is a tenacious player who has been among the top central midfielders in the league in recent years, and we welcome him to our family."
Sarvas, 34, spent his previous three years in Los Angeles with the Galaxy, where he won MLS Cups in 2012 and 2014. The reliable midfielder started 80 out of a possible 88 matches for LA from 2011-2014, and in 2014 tallied an impressive 11 assists, an MLS-career-high.
The experienced Sao Paulo native began his career in Brazil, but moved to Swedish side Karlskrona AIF at the age of 23. He then played for fellow Swedish teams Mjallby AIF and IF Limhamm Brunkeflo. Sarvas played one year in Poland for KSP Warszawa, and in 2011 he transferred to Costa Rican side LD Alajuelense.
