D.C. United News Release
D.C. United Academy Results: D.C. United's Academy teams came away undefeated from this weekend's matches in Massachusetts against Seacoast United and FC Greater Boston. In games that Youth Development Director John Maessner called their best soccer of the year, the Under-16 team won both their matches while the Under-18 team recorded a win and a draw.
On Saturday, June 21, the U16 squad defeated Seacoast 2-1 thanks to goals from Chris Hegngi and Paul Torres, while the U18s saw Nikolaj Kapus and Danillo Lima score in a 2-2 tie.
"These young men are developing at a very rapid rate," Maessner said. "We have really turned a corner in our program. Our players have had time to process all of the information that they have been inundated with since last September and are at the point where they realize that they all have the potential to play for our first team. They understand that if they take on the information that we are providing and work very hard on a daily basis, they will give themselves a very good chance to play professionally."
Both team tallied wins on Sunday, June 22. The U16s defeated Boston 2-1 with goals from Michael Burgos and Chris Hegngi. The U18s prevailed in a high scoring match 3-2 thanks to tallies from Ryan Gracia, Nijolaj Kapus and Daniel Shannon.
"We are very pleased with how our players are developing and will continue to strive to create the best environment in the country for our players," Maessner concluded.
The Academy teams will finish the regular season this week during the Academy Summer Showcase in Greensboro, NC. After that, they will look to defend their MLS U17 Cup Championship in Denver from July 3-10.
Youth Camps this summer: D.C. United Youth Camps have started and will run throughout the summer in Washington DC, Virginia and Maryland. Academy staff and current and past academy team players will lead the camps, with appearances by D.C. United players. In order to promote the upcoming June 30-July 3 Summer Camp at Washington-Lee High School in Arlington, D.C. United will host a free soccer clinic at the school with United legend Marco Etcheverry on Saturday, June 28. To register for the clinic or for more information, please call 202-587-5468 or visit www.dcunited.com Broadcasting and P.A.
