D.C. United Academy Update: May 13, 2008

D.C. United Academy results: D.C. United's Under-16 and Under-18 Development Academy teams came out with two wins and two draws at the D.C. United training field on May 7-10, versus Potomac and NY Red Bulls.

D.C. United's U-16 squad saw a 4-1 win over Potomac on Wednesday, with goals from Michael Funes, Michael Burgos (2), and Daniel Rice. The U-18s also came out with a victory, beating Potomac on Thursday 4-3 with goals from Danny Shannon, Matt Oduaran, Danillo Lima, and Shane Cooke. The U18 game was scheduled to be played at RFK Stadium prior to United's match against the Chicago Fire, however, due to rain the game was moved to the training field.

"We were very pleased with the results against Potomac, local Academy rivals as we won with both our U16 and U18 teams," said United's Director of Youth Development John Maessner. "These were special games as we were able to play both of them on our ‘home turf' at RFK. It is always a little more special when you play on the same field that the first team plays on."

On Sunday, the U-16s fought hard for a 1-1 draw against MLS rival NY Red Bulls with Marcus Douglas scoring United's only goal. The U-18's found the same results against NY Red Bulls on Saturday, ending the game in a 1-1 draw with the lone goal coming from Prince Lapnet.

"Our matches on Sunday went fairly well as both teams tied MLS rival NY Red Bull 1-1," Maessner added. "We created many chances in both games and could have gotten away with 2 wins. There are many things we will take from the last two games and work on in training this week in preparation for our upcoming schedule."

D.C. United's youth Academy teams have very important games coming up in the next several weeks. The teams will be traveling to Rockford, Illinois for the Spring Academy Showcase, Spain for the U17 Clubs Youth World Cup, Denver for the MLS U17 Cup and Greensboro, NC for the Summer Academy Showcase.

"We continue to be excited about the players in our program and look forward to next couple of months where we will look to finish well in the Academy League and go on to showcase our players in some of the best youth competitions available." Maessner concluded.
