Danville Otterbots News Release
DANVILLE, Va. - Two Danville Braves players put together multi-hit performances as the D-Braves exploded for 10 runs in the fifth inning and extended their win streak to four games with a 10-2 win against the Kingsport Mets Monday night at American Legion Post 325 Field. The D-Braves win hands the Mets their sixth loss in 7 games.
After a scoreless first inning, Mets right fielder Maikis De La Cruz bounced a ball off home plate and beat the throw to first to get aboard in the second. De La Cruz then reached on a fielder's choice and scored on a bloop single by third baseman Anthony Chavez to put the Mets on top with an early 1-0 lead. During the play, Chavez got greedy and tried for two, but the D-Braves caught him in an inning-ending rundown to cut short any more of a Mets scoring threat.
In the third, the Mets benefitted from some small ball in the bottom half of their order. Number 9-hitter, second baseman Brandon Kaup, lined a leadoff single and stole second before reaching third on center fielder Bradley Marquez's groundout to first. Left fielder Eris Peguero plated Kaup with the first sac fly of the game to make it 2-0.
But Mets starter Akeel Morris unraveled in the fifth, and D-Braves starter, Eduardo Castillo, finally got some run support in a big way. Morris plunked D-Braves first baseman Aris Alcantara to begin the inning. Center fielder Felix Marte pushed Alcantara to second with a seeing-eye single. With nobody out and runners at first and second, Morris continued to struggle with control issues and walked shortstop Eric Garcia to load the bases. Left fielder Kurt Fleming hit a hotshot back at Morris, who couldn't field it cleanly, which allowed Alcantara to score from third. Second baseman Levi Hyams then cleared the bases with a grand slam home run, the first of his career, to make it 5-2. The hit parade continued as the D-Braves batted around for 10 runs in the inning, their highest number of runs scored in an inning this season.
Castillo (1-1) pitched 6.0 innings and allowed two runs, all earned, on five hits to qualify for his first win of the season. Morris (0-2) pitched 4.0 innings and allowed five runs, four earned, on five hits to suffer the loss. D-Braves reliever Jeremy Fitzgerald sat down six Mets in a row and pitched two innings of scoreless relief. Ignacio Geronimo pitched a 1-2-3 ninth to close out the game in a none-save situation.
