Danville Otterbots News Release

DANVILLE, VA - It was a rough start for Daniel Cordero and the D-Braves in Saturday night's showdown with the Bluefield Blue Jays. However the offense would capitalize on four Bluefield errors, the pitching settled in, and the bullpen closed the door on the Jays for a 6-3 victory.

Daniel Cordero gave up a single to Richard Urena, the first Bluefield batter of the night, a sign of things to come. He was sacrificed over to second on a bunt by Angel Rojas, and then it was Josh Almonte who ripped a tripped to center to give the Jays an early 1-0 lead. With Rowdy Tellez at the plate and two out, Cordero balked, scoring Almonte from third making it 2-0 after one. Cordero gave up a solo home run in the fifth inning, and would finish the game with six innings pitched, four hits allowed, three runs, one walk, and four strikeouts.

Danville capitalized on Bluefield's mistakes all night long, scoring four unearned runs on four Blue Jay errors. In the third Joe Daris reached on a throwing error by Urena at shortstop, scoring fellow outfielder Fernelys Sanchez. In the next at bat Ozhaino Albies singled to left, allowing Daris to score with help from an error on Bluefield third baseman Gabriel Cenas, tying the game at two. Albies would single home Sanchez for another Danville run in the fifth, then Jordan Edgerton would reach on an error that allowed Daris and Albies to score in the next at bat, giving Danville a 5-2 lead.

Joe Daris again had a big night for the D-Braves at the plate. The centerfielder went 2-5 with an RBI, 3 runs scored, and an inside the park home run that gave the D-Braves their final run of the night, and a 6-3 lead in the in the seventh inning.

Danville's bullpen continued its remarkable scoreless inning streak, now reaching 42.1 straight scoreless innings, adding three more tonight by Colby Holmes and Luis Miranda. Holmes went 1.2 innings, gave up three hits, and struck out one, while recording his first hold of the season with Danville. Miranda went the final 1.1 innings, walking two and striking out one in his team leading fourth save of the season. Miranda now has an ERA of 0.55 in 16.1 innings pitched this season.

The Appalachian League East leading Danville Braves (21-13) will be back in action tomorrow night for the final game of this series against the Bluefield Blue Jays (17-19). Danville will send out Alec Grosser (3-0, 2.88 ERA) to face off with Bluefield's Evan Smith (2-1, 2.45 ERA), and the contest is scheduled for a 6:05 p.m. first pitch at Bluefield's Bowen Field.
