Greeneville Astros News Release
Greeneville, TN - The Greeneville Astros (16-18) got off to a fast start on Friday night at Pioneer Park and then cruised past the Bristol Pirates (10-22) to a 9-4 win. The Astros scored in each of the first four innings, including a four-run third, on their way to winning the first game of the split series.
It all began in the first inning with a Yonathan Mejia RBI on a sacrifice fly to score Jason Martin. Then, in the second, Kristian Trompiz had a RBI single to give the Astros a 2-0 lead. However, it was the third inning when the Astros did the most damage.
All four of the Astros' runs in the third came with two outs. The first came on a solo homer from Jacob Nottingham just to the right of dead center field. Then, a few batters later with the bases loaded, three runs scored on another Trompiz single coupled with a Pirates fielding error in right field.
Holding a 6-0 advantage, the Astros were in control of the game but continued to build on their lead.
Antonio Nunez scored on a passed ball in the fourth inning after initially getting on base with a walk. In the sixth, Nottingham brought in another run on a sacrifice fly. Finally, in the seventh, Ydarqui Marte got on with a walk and eventually scored the Astros' final run on a wild pitch.
The Pirates finally got on scoreboard in the eighth inning to avoid the shutout. With four hits and two walks in the inning, the Pirates put up four runs to make a big cut into the Astros lead. However, the Astros managed to pull it together quickly thereafter to close out the game.
The Astros' starting pitcher, Agapito Barrios, earned the win after giving up just three hits over five scoreless innings with five strikeouts.
The Astros will head to Bristol on Saturday to take on the Pirates in a doubleheader to make up the game that was previously rained out on July 8th. Game one will begin at 6:00pm with game two to follow.
The Astros will return home to face the Pirates on Sunday at 6:00pm for the final game of the split series.
