August 17, 2012 - Appalachian League (ApL)
Danville Otterbots News Release

GAME 1

DANVILLE, Va. - Frank LaFreniere retired the first batter he faced in every inning he pitched and the D-Braves shut out the Bluefield Blue Jays 3-0 in the first game of the Friday night doubleheader at American Legion Post 325 Field.

Left fielder Kurt Fleming led off the third with his sixth double of the season. After Blue Jays reliever Julio Carmona retired second baseman Levi Hyams and shortstop Ronald Luna, Carlos Franco cracked a two out RBI single to plate Fleming and open the scoring in the Braves favor, 1-0.

LaFreniere let up a single, double and a walk in the fifth, but managed to pitch his way out of the bases loaded jam.

Once again Franco put things into play with a sixth inning single. Catcher Josh Elander, who, in his last at-bat was hit in the earflap of the helmet, continued his hot hitting when he doubled Franco home. Elander now has 7 hits in his last 17 at-bats (.411). First baseman Casey Kalenkosky singled Elander in to make it 3-0 and cap the D-Braves two-run sixth.

The Blue Jays went 0-for-5 with runners in scoring position and left a total of six men on base.

Thanks to a double play ball, LaFreniere, a pitch-to-contact starter, faced the minimum through 2 1/3 innings. He went on to pitch a total of 6.0 scoreless innings of five hit ball. He walked two and fanned three to earn the win. Zack Jadofsky pitched a 1-2-3 seventh to close out the game and notch his first save of the season.

GAME 2

In his last five outings between the bullpen and rotation, Eduardo Castillo had allowed just one run in nine innings pitched. In that span, he accumulated a miniscule .99 ERA and was pitch perfect in the nightcap.

Castillo sat down six straight over the last two innings of his outing and pitched a total of 5.0 scoreless innings of two hit ball.

The D-Braves again scored the first run of the game and yet again it came in the third inning.

Back-to-back singles from catcher Troy Snitker and center fielder Logan Robbins knocked in right fielder Blake Brown. Brown worked a walk on four straight pitches to lead off the inning. Robbins extended his hit streak to nine games in the at-bat. Second baseman Levi Hyams perfectly executed the sacrifice bunt, which advanced Snitker and Robbins up 90 feet. Call-up shortstop, Seth Moranda, then hit a two-run single to cap the three-run third.

The Blue Jays just could not wake up their dormant bats. They went 0-for-8 with runners in scoring position and left a total of seven men on base.

D-Braves stopper, Bryam Garcia, closed out the game and converted his sixth save in six opportunities.

Tomorrow night's game is Replica Cap Giveaway Night. The first 500 fans will receive a replica on-field cap courtesy of Innkeeper Hotels. The D-Braves and Blue Jays play three games in the next two days with one tomorrow and then two more on Sunday.

Mauricio Cabrera will get the nod for the D-Braves and Alberto Tirado gets the call for the Blue Jays. Game time is 7:00 p.m. and gates will open one hour beforehand.
