Picking its final 10 players of the 2016 Major League Baseball Draft on Saturday, the Arizona Diamondbacks selected six position players and four pitchers. Of the final 10 players taken, just one was a high school player.
The 31st through 40th picks are listed below:
Williams Durruthy | 31st Round (929 overall) | RHP | Florida International University | R/R | 6-4 | 225
Durruthy made 27 relief appearances for the Panthers in 2016, finishing the year with a 3-3 record and a 2.81 ERA over 32 innings. Serving as the team's closer, he converted nine saves and struck out 35 hitters. A standout reliever throughout his time at FIU, Durruthy has pitched to a 5-4 record and a 2.24 ERA with 11 saves over 72 total appearances and 100.2 innings of work. The right-hander has also struck out 117 hitters over his collegiate career while limiting opponents to a .203 average against. Prior to enrolling at FIU, Durruthy was named 2013 Rawlings Florida Region honorable mention and was also a Perfect Game 2012 Underclass honorable mention All-American.
Trevor Simms | 32nd Round (959 overall) | RHP | Tulane | R/R | 6-4 | 205
Simms played at Rice in 2012, Weatherford College in 2013 and West Virginia in 2014 before transferring to Tulane and sitting out the 2015 season due to transfer rules. Was used as a two-way player prior to coming to Tulane. Pitching for the Green Wave, Simms recorded a 4-1 record with a 3.44 ERA over 16 appearances and one start. The right-hander tossed 18.1 innings, striking out 22 and limiting opponents to a .186 average against.
Paxton De La Garza | 33rd Round (989 overall) | SS | Angelo State University | R/R | 6-0 | 200
De La Garza was selected 2016 South Central - ABCA/Rawlings All-Region first team and helped guide his team to the 2016 Division II College World Series. De La Garza, who also took home All-Region honors and a Co-Player of the Year selection according to the National Collegiate Baseball Writer's Association, hit .333 with 46 runs scored, 18 doubles, two triples and nine homers over 61 games played to lead the team in round-trippers. The right-hand hitting infielder drove in a team-high 46 runs while slugging .557 and reaching at a .403 clip.
Connor Owings | 34th Round (1,019 overall) | 2B | Coastal Carolina University | L/R | 5-10 | 187
Prior to drafting Jake Peevyhouse with the 34th pick in 2015, the Diamondbacks explained that from the 2015 Draft forward, their 34th-round pick would be the Cory Hahn 34th Pick. Hahn, who works in Arizona's scouting department, suffered a fractured vertebra after playing just three games as a freshman with Arizona State in 2011. Before hiring him, the D-backs selected Hahn with their 34th-round pick (for his No. 34 jersey) in 2013. Owings, the #491 prospect according to Baseball America, is the younger brother of current Diamondback, and former Osprey, Chris Owings. Owings is currently playing in a Super Regional against LSU. So far this year, he has batted a team-best .373 with 57 runs scored, 16 doubles, two triples and 15 homers. Owings has driven in 51 runs and is slugging .673. A threat to run on the bases, he has swiped 14 bags in 15 attempts. A second team All-Big South selection in 2015 after batting .270 with nine homers, Owings took home even more hardware in 2016, earning Big South Player of the Year and second team All-American honors according to Louisville Slugger/Collegiate Baseball. He is also a semifinalist for the Gregg Olson Breakout Player of the Year Award. According to scouts, Owings swings hard, which makes him prone to swinging and missing. Owings has played all over the diamond in his college career and provides versatility.
Billy Endris | 35th Round (1,049 overall) | OF | Florida Atlantic | L/L | 6-3 | 190
Endris was originally drafted in the 39th round of the 2015 MLB Draft by the Kansas City Royals after hitting .329 with three doubles and four triples that year. Returning to school, he started 52 games in 2016, hitting .288 with 38 runs scored, 10 doubles, two triples, two homers and 31 RBI. A solid defender, he committed just one error with 160 putouts. A threat to run when aboard, Endris stole eight bases in 12 attempts. Over his four-year career at Florida Atlantic, Endris scored 88 runs, collected 19 doubles, six triples and four homers, and notched 56 RBI to accompany 22 stolen bases.
Rob Galligan | 36th Round (1,079 overall) | LHP | University of Maryland | R/L | 6-4 | 218
Galligan appeared in 26 games as a reliever for Maryland in 2016, pitching to a 0-3 record and a 3.09 ERA with one save. The lefty tossed 23.1 innings, striking out 13. As a junior in 2015, Galligan made a career-high 27 appearances with four starts, finishing with four wins and posting a 2.74 ERA with 58 strikeouts in 62.1 innings. A native of Syosset, N.Y., Galligan attended St. Dominic High School where he was a first team All-American in 2010 and 2011.
Welby Malczewski | 37th Round (1,109 overall) | LHP | Heartland CC | L/L | 6-6 | 230
Malczewski appeared in nine games, making six starts, for Heartland in 2016. The lefty finished the year with a 6.75 ERA and a 2-1 record while tossing 20 innings and striking out 17. He is committed to Auburn University.
Nelson Mompierre | 38th Round (1,139 overall) | C | Miami Dade CC South | L/R | 6-0 | 195
Mompierre played in 38 games and hit .373 with 24 runs scored, 12 doubles and three homers to go along with 34 RBI in 2016. Mompierre struck out just 14 times while drawing 23 walks. For his efforts, he was named 2016 All-Southern Conference first team. As a freshman in 2015, Mompierre appeared in 14 games and collected eight runs scored, two doubles, a homer and eight RBI. As a high school player at Christopher Columbus, he was a 2014 Perfect Game honorable mention All-American and a Florida region honorable mention honoree.
Jacob Olson | 39th Round (1,169 overall) | 2B | West Georgia Technical College | R/R | 5-11 | 185
Olson garnered Georgia Collegiate Athletic Association All-Region first team honors following a standout first year at West Georgia Technical College. Olson, a native of Monroe, Ga., led the Golden Knights with a .351 batting average. He finished the year with a team-high eight home runs, 38 runs scored and 36 RBI over 49 games played. Olson led the conference with 20 doubles and was sixth in the conference with a .603 slugging percentage. As a high school player at Monroe Area High School, Olson was a 2015 Southeast Region honorable mention selection.
Jordan Wiley | 40th Round (1,199 overall) | CF | Richland High School | L/R | 6-1 | 190
Wiley is a 2016 Rawlings Perfect Game honorable mention All-American and a Texas All-Region pick. According to scouts, Wiley is a football player with present strength and plus speed, and is a raw outfield prospect who can really drive the ball when he squares it up. He's committed to San Jacinto (Texas) CC.
Arizona's current 25-man roster features former Osprey players Paul Goldschmidt (2009), Chris Owings (2009), Archie Bradley (2011), Jake Lamb (2012), and Silvino Bracho (2013).
Three of the first 10 picks from Arizona's 2015 Draft class appeared for the O's last year, including seventh-rounder Francis Christy (Palomar College), eighth-rounder Kal Simmons (Kennesaw State), and 10th-rounder Joey Armstrong (UNLV).
