Cyclones Say Goodbye To Johnstown, 3-2

JOHNSTOWN, Pennsylvania - The Cincinnati Cyclones got a third period goal from second year forward Mark Van Guilder to give the club a 3-2 win over the Johnstown Chiefs. The win keeps Cincinnati's division championship and American Conference championship dreams alive.

It was the final meeting between the teams in Johnstown, as the Chiefs will relocate to Greenville, SC next season. The Cyclones have a 46-18-6 mark against Johnstown all-time and a 25-7-5 slate at the Cambria County War Memorial.

The Cyclones scored the opening goal of the game t 7:44 of the first period when Matt Pierce collected his 27th score of the season. Jimmy Kilpatrick and Dustin Sproat had the assists on the tally. It was the 44th time this season that Cincinnati scored the opening score of a contest- most in the ECHL. The shots on goal favored the Cyclones, 10-3.

Johnstown scored a pair of goals in the second period and when the frame ended- the game was even at two apiece. The Chiefs tied the game when Connor Shields picked up his 27th goal at 1:21 from Troy Schwab and Chanse Fitzpatrick. The Cyclones regained the lead when former Chief Ryan Del Monte netted his tenth score from Brian O'Hanley and Sproat at 8:38. Johnstown knotted the scores again when Dan Collins fired a drive from the top of the left circle on a five-on-three power play at 16:21. Brian Kaufman and Schwab had the assists. The shots were even at nine each.

The send off was complete when Cincinnati regained the lead at 11:25 as Mark Van Guilder collected a rebound in the low slot and fired a shot past Kris Mayotte for his sixth score of the campaign. Jimmy Kilpatrick re-routed a pass from Kevin Roeder on goal to create the rebound the proved to be the game winner. The Cyclones had to kill four third period penalties, including a five-on-three situation for 1:46. The shots in the third favored Cincinnati again, 12-5, and for the game, 31-17.

Jeremy Smith picked up his 21st win of the season with a 15 save performance. Kris Mayotte absorbed the loss with a 28 save effort. The Cyclones were one for six on the power play and killed seven of eight shorthanded situations.

Cincinnati is 42-24-3, while Johnstown is 17-41-11. The Cyclones travel to North Division leader Kalamazoo on Wednesday before returning home for U.S. Bank Fan Appreciation Night on Friday, April 2 versus Johnstown at 7:30pm. Hundreds of prizes worth more than $5000 will be given to fans attending the game. The regular season concludes with a clash at Wheeling on Saturday, April 3.

The opening round of the Cincinnati Cyclones USA Collision Centers postseason will be during the week of April 5 and will be a best-of-five series.
