Johnstown Chiefs News Release

Johnstown, PA - The Johnstown Chiefs were defeated by the Cincinnati Cyclones by a score of 3-2 Sunday afternoon at the UPMC Health Plan Ice Rink at the Cambria County War Memorial

The Cyclones boast the American Conference's best defense and certainly showed it during the first period. They kept in check a Chiefs offense that produced 5 goals in the third period on Friday and limited it to just three shots. The visitors were then able to score the lone goal of the first period and grab the lead. Matt Pierce potted his 27th of the season taking advantage of a power play at the 7:44 mark. He sifted a rebound past Kris Mayotte with Jimmy Kilpatrick and Dustin Sproat registering the assists on the play.

The Chiefs answered back early in the second period to tie the game at the 1:21 mark. Troy Schwab fired a shot off Cincinnati goalie Jeremy Smith on a break and Connor Shields came crashing in for the rebound and sent it top left. Chanse Fitzpatrick picked up the second assist to give him four points on the week. Cincinatti was able to regain the lead later on in the period. Former Chief Ryan Del Monte scored another rebound goal at the 8:38 mark with Brian O'Hanley and Sproat knotting the assists. The Chiefs fought back and tied up the game deep in the period. Dan Collins found the back of the net at the 16:21 mark on a 5-on-3 power play. Collins continued his strong play this weekend after picking up two goals and two assists in the win on Friday. Brian Kaufman and Schwab registered the assists.

Just over five minutes into the third period the Chiefs thought they had gained their first lead of the game but Fitzpatrick had an apparent 5-on-3 power play goal waved off. The Cyclones were able to take the lead on a goal by Mark Van Guilder at the 11:25 mark. Kilpatrick and Kevin Roeder gained the assists. The Chiefs were awarded a power play with just over four minutes to play when Somerset native Cullen Eddy was whistled for holding. Johnstown couldn't mount much of an attack with the man advantage and then the power play was cut short when Sean Berkstresser was sent off for cross-checking at 17:05.

Mayotte made 30 saves in taking the loss while the Chiefs went 1-for-8 on the power play and 5-for-6 on the penalty kill.

Mark your calendars! The Chiefs return to Johnstown on Wednesday, March 31 against the Toledo Walleye at 7:05.
