Brooklyn Cyclones News Release

June 25, 2007 - The Cyclones beat the Aberdeen IronBirds on Monday night by the score of 5-4 in dramatic fashion with a comeback win in the late innings. Brooklyn relievers David Koons and Stephen Clyne held Aberdeen scoreless for the last six innings and Jason Jacobs' RBI triple in the bottom of the 8th proved to be the winning run.

Aberdeen jumped out to an early 3-0 lead on Brooklyn starter Nick Waechter in the top of the 1st. The Cyclones would get back in the game in the bottom of the 2nd, when with two outs, Jake Eigsti reached on a fielding error by IronBird shortstop Tyler Henson to extend the inning. Yasmil Bucce was hit by a pitch, and Lucas Duda followed with an RBI double, scoring Eigsti. Bucce then slid under a tag by Aberdeen catcher Brian Bent on a wild pitch, and Duda crossed home plate to tie the game at three when Henson committed his second error of the inning on a ground ball hit by Brandon Kawal.

Waechter settled down after the first inning, but Aberdeen got a run back in the top of the third to take a 4-3 lead. In the top of the 6th, David Koons came on in relief for Brooklyn and worked three scoreless innings. Koons faced only the minimum nine batters to keep the Cyclones in the game, and lowered his ERA to 2.70.

Ender Chavez, pinch hitting for Kawal, legged out an infield single to lead off the bottom of the 8th. After Brooklyn's Matt Bouchard sacrificed Chavez over to second, Chavez advanced to third on a J.R. Voyles groundout to second base. With two outs, right fielder Will Vogl chopped the ball down the third base line and beat out the throw to first as Chavez scored, to tie the game at 4-4. Catcher Jason Jacobs (pictured, by George Napolitano) then smacked a triple to the wall in centerfield as Vogl crossed the plate to give the Cyclones a 5-4 lead and Jacobs his first RBI of the season. Brooklyn's Stephen Clyne came on in the 9th and earned his second save of the season, ending the game by getting Aberdeen's Henson to strike out swinging with men on first and second base. Koons got his first win of the season.

The Cyclones will host the IronBirds in the second game of the series Tuesday night at KeySpan Park at 7pm. The first 2,500 fans will receive a Jersey Backpack courtesy of Dime Savings Bank. Tickets are still available. To get your Cyclones tickets now, CLICK HERE.
