State College Spikes News Release
State College - The State College Spikes began the second season in franchise history, and first as the Single-A Affiliate of the Pittsburgh Pirates, with a record setting week at the ballpark. On Opening Night, the Spikes welcomed a standing room only crowd of 5,671 fans to the ballpark, setting a Medlar Field at Lubrano park record.
That was followed up by another all-time high, as 14,506 fans walked through the gates at the ballpark during the team's three game series against Jamestown. This weekend's series broke the previous record of 13,464 fans for a three-game set, which was set from July 2nd - 4th during the 2006 season.
In addition, three of the Spikes first four games of the season rank among the top five crowds in ballpark history after breaking the 5,000 mark in each of them. Last season there were four crowds that were over the 5,000 mark, and this year the Spikes have already had three crowds that have topped that milestone. Overall attendance is up by 11% from the same point last season.
"We couldn't have asked for a better opening week," said Spikes General Manager Rick Janac. "We had beautiful weather, great giveaways and an amazing energy in the crowd. Our first home stand has set the tone for a spectacular 2007 season."
But fans who couldn't make it to the ballpark this weekend will still have an opportunity to get their hands on the hottest tickets in town when the Spikes return to Medlar Field at Lubrano Park on Sunday, July 1st for the 6:05 p.m. game. The Spikes will welcome former Spikes manager Mark DeJohn and the Batavia Muckdogs to the ballpark for a three game series.
For the Sunday game, all ticket holders 14 & under are invited to participate in the Spikes Youth Clinic from 12 - 3:00 pm. Registration begins at 11:00 a.m. and admission is free for those with a ticket to that evening's game. Following the Sunday game, fans are also invited to stay in their seats and enjoy a post-game fireworks extravaganza.
On Monday, July 2nd the Spikes will celebrate Parks & Recreation night. Game time is set for 7:05 p.m and the first 1,000 fans 14 & under will receive a Soccer Ball courtesy of Nittany Bank. The three-game series will come to a close on Tuesday evening with another post-game fireworks spectacular presented by PennAg Industries.
The Spikes will then take on their intrastate rival and Philadelphia Phillies, the Williamsport Crosscutters in an afternoon affair on July 4th. Game time is set for 1:00 p.m. Following the game fans will be invited to re-enter the ballpark beginning at 6:00 p.m. for some food, fun and entertainment as part of the Fourth Fest Activities. The ballpark will remain open throughout the evening and will serve as one of the best viewing points for that evening's fireworks.
The Spikes will close out their home stand and their three-game set with the Crosscutters on Friday, July 6th. The first 2,000 fans in attendance at the 7:05 p.m. game will receive a Spikes Equipment Bag.
