STATEN ISLAND, NY - Despite five scoreless innings from starter Christian James and a late lead, the Brooklyn Cyclones, the Short-Season Class A affiliate of the New York Mets, dropped Friday night's Opening Day decision 3-1 to the Staten Island Yankees at Richmond County Bank Ballpark.

BIG MOMENTS

- With the game tied in the seventh inning, Staten Island's Frederick Cuevas cranked a solo home run to center field, giving the Yankees a 2-1 lead. Canaan Smith added an insurance run in the eighth with an RBI double.

- Brooklyn's Jose Medina manufactured the first run of the game in the seventh inning, scoring from second base on a wild pitch and a throwing error against catcher Jerry Seitz.

- Though neither starter factored in the decision, both Christian James and Matt Sauers did not allow a run in their respective outings. James tossed five innings of four-hit ball with three strikeouts, allowing a walk.

- David Thompson, on a minor league rehab assignment, went 0-4.

- At 20 years and 22 days old, Christian James became the third-youngest Opening Day pitcher in the team's 18-year history. Only 2012 Cyclone Gabriel Ynoa (19 years and 23 days) and 2013 Cyclone Robert Gsellman (19 years and 334 days) were younger.

- The Cyclones fall to 12-6 all-time on Opening Day and 10-5 in Opening Day contests against Staten Island.
