Brooklyn Cyclones News Release
Brooklyn, NY - The Cyclones (14-12) lost both games of Monday's doubleheader to the Auburn Doubledays (14-12) and have now lost eight of their last nine at home. The first game was the continuation of last night's game, which was called in the fourth inning due to the heavy fog. The Cyclones led 3-0 at the time of the delay, but Auburn came back and won the game 5-4 in ten innings.
Brooklyn had great opportunities to win the game in the 8th, 9th and 10th innings, with the score tied at 3-3, but were unable to capitalize. In the 8th, the Cyclones had bases loaded, but failed to bring in a run. Jon Malo and Jesus Gamero got caught in a rare 2-5-1-4-6 double play, after both runners were caught in run downs following a botched squeeze attempt. In the ninth, Joe Mihalics - the potential game winning run- was thrown out at the plate after trying to score from second when Rafael Arroyo, who was 3-for-4 in the game, laced a sharp single into left field. The Cyclones got one in the tenth, after Auburn got two in the top of the frame, but the game ended on a deep fly out by Joe Holden, with the tying run aboard.
Waner Mateo went four innings, giving up no runs, on three hits, while walking two and striking out three before the game was suspended due to heavy fog on Sunday night. Travis Hope started the continuation, going three innings, giving up two runs, both earned, on five hits. Aristides Almenar (0-2) got the loss for Brooklyn. He went 2.2 inings, giving up two runs, one earned, on six hits, while walking one and striking out three.
Errors did in the Cyclones in the second game, which was shortened to seven innings because of the New York Penn League rules on doubleheaders. Auburn scored three runs in the second inning. The Cyclones helped them out by making two errors in that inning four throughout the game. That would be all the Doubledays would need as they won 4-2. Brooklyn loaded the bases with one out in the bottom of the seventh, but Rafael Arroyo hit into a double play to end the game.
Jeff Landing (1-4) suffered the loss for Brooklyn. Despite the outcome, Landing pitched well, going six innings, giving up four runs, just two earned, on eight hits, while walking one and striking out two. Josh Petersen had a single in the ninth inning to keep his hot streak alive. He has hit safely in nine of the last ten games and has raised his average from .246 to .326 over that span.
Brooklyn heads to Oneonta tomorrow to take on the Tigers, who have the best record in the New York- Penn League. The Cyclones will return home on Friday, to take on the Jamestown Jammers.
