New Jersey Cardinals News Release

The Oneonta Tigers defeated the New Jersey Cardinals 6-5 in 11 innings at Skylands Park in Augusta, New Jersey to sweep the teams three game series. The loss dropped the Cardinals to 12-15, while Oneonta improved to 18-6. Corey Meacham took the loss for the Cards to fall to 0-2 on the season, while Jeff Hahn picked up his third win for the Tigers. Kevin Whelan pitched a scoreless 11th for his 2nd save.

The Tigers jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in the top of the first against Cardinals starter Nick Webber. After both shortstop Mark Haske and right fielder Matt Joyce singled, centerfielder Justin Justice followed with a two out RBI single to right field to score both runners. But New Jersey quickly answered back in their half of the first with four runs. Tiger starter Sendy Vasquez walked the bases loaded with two outs, then served up a single to Adam Morris that scored three runs after Justice threw wildly in from centerfield. New Jersey added the fourth run on a Yonathan Sirva double down the left field line. Oneonta cut the New Jersey lead to 4-3 in the third on a Corey Middleton RBI single, but the Cards extended the margin to 5-3 in bottom half of the inning. Shortstop Tyler Greene led off the inning with a single, stole second base and scored when Adam Rodgers singled to left field.

First baseman Ryan Roberson hit a solo home run in the sixth to trim the Cardinals lead to one, and Haske tied the score in the seventh with his third hit of the game, a RBI single.

The Tigers took the lead in the 11th when leadoff hitter William Rhymes tripled to right field past a sliding Chad Gabriel and scored when Haske lifted a sac fly to left field. New Jersey threatened in the bottom of the 11th, but A.J Van Slyke grounded out to first with runners on first and second to end the game.

The Cardinals are scheduled to start a 6 game road trip tomorrow, July 19, when they travel to Auburn to take on the Doubledays (Toronto) in the first game of their three game set. They conclude their trip in Vermont, with a weekend series against the Expos (Washington).
