West Virginia Black Bears News Release

Granville, W. Va. - Wrapping up a six-game homestand at Monongalia County Ballpark, the West Virginia Black Bears were defeated by the Brooklyn Cyclones 7-1.

The loss gives the Cyclones a 2-1 series victory, as they held the hometown Black Bears to five hits in the ballgame.

West Virginia starting pitcher Mike LoPresti breezed through the Brooklyn lineup in the first two innings before running into some trouble in the third. A single, a double and a fielding error brought three runs around to score, giving the visitors the lead.

LoPresti refocused through the next two innings, exiting the game after the fifth. In his five frames of work, the righty gave up four hits and three runs with only one earned, striking out two batters and walking another.

After a quiet sixth inning, the Cyclones got back in the run column on a passed ball in the top of the seventh to put the score at 4-0.

Brooklyn followed that up with three more runs in the eighth, putting the visitors well ahead in the late innings.

P Cody Smith gave the Black Bears a quality frame in the ninth, retiring the Cyclones in order to bring the game to its final half-inning.

In the bottom of the ninth, 1B Luke Mangieri started things off by picking up his second hit of the afternoon, extending his hit streak to seven games. After advancing to third base on a wild pitch and a fielding error, RF Brett Kinneman cracked a single through the infield to bring the game to 7-1.

West Virginia loaded the bases with two outs, but Brooklyn got the groundout it needed to seal the team's second win in Granville.

The Black Bears head on the road to begin a six-game road trip, opening up with a series against the Auburn Doubledays. First pitch for tomorrow's game is scheduled for 6:30 p.m.
