Norwich Sea Unicorns News Release
AUBURN, N.Y. - Wenceel Perez tallied his first New York-Penn League home run and drove in both runs for the Connecticut Tigers (20-20) in a 2-0 shutout win over the Auburn Doubledays (21-19) on Sunday afternoon to avoid a three-game sweep at Falcon Park.
Perez went deep for his third home run as a pro against Francys Peguero (Loss, 2-3) in the top of the third inning. Third baseman Shane Cooper scored on the homer following his leadoff walk. Perez, an 18-year-old shortstop from the Dominican Republic, went 2-for-4 at the plate with two runs batted in on Sunday and finished the series 6-for-9 with five RBIs following his four-hit night on Saturday.
Tigers starter Jose Vasquez (Win, 4-1) carried a no-hitter through four complete innings before Auburn left fielder Jonathan Pryor broke it up with a leadoff single in the fifth. The 22-year-old starter from Venezuela stranded the bases loaded in the fifth and Auburn left two more runners on base in the sixth. Vasquez exited after six innings with four hits, two walks, and five strikeouts to lower his rotation-best earned run average to 2.27.
Connecticut relievers combined for three scoreless innings with two hits allowed. Arvicent Perez (Hold, 1) stranded two more Doubledays in the seventh and Dylan Stock (Hold, 2) pitched a one-hit eighth inning after taking the loss in 11 innings on Saturday. Drew Crosby (Save, 1) used 11 pitches in a perfect ninth inning to record his first professional save. Auburn batted 0-for-8 with runners in scoring position during the series finale.
Auburn pitchers retired 17 Tigers in a row between the third and eighth innings. Connecticut second baseman Alexis Garcia went 2-for-4 at the plate with a triple. Connecticut snapped a three-game losing streak with its second shutout win and first scoreless pitching performance since a 3-0 home victory over the State College Spikes on July 25.
On Monday, the Tigers return home to Dodd Stadium in Norwich for the first of three games against the Vermont Lake Monsters. Connecticut right-handed starter Gio Arriera (2-2, 3.93) throws first pitch against the Stedler Division rivals at 7:05 p.m on Kids Eat Free Monday.
