MOLINE, Ill. - A three-goal second period for the Quad City Mallards was the difference on Friday night in their 5-3 win over the Denver Cutthroats at iWireless Center in front of 3,044 in attendance.

AJ Gale scored his 20th goal of the season to give the Cutthroats (18-12-3) a 3-2 lead 4:54 into period two, but the Mallards (14-15-3) responded just 14 seconds later to tie the game and pulled away with two more later in the frame.

Troy Schwab opened up the scoring in a back-and-forth opening period off a crossing pass from Gale in the right circle at 5:04. Derek Matheson knotted the game for the Mallards with a slap shot across the blueline with 7:09 to play, but Luke Fulghum put the Fish back out in front a minute later with a deflection goal in front of the net. Shayne Toporowski's one-timer from the top of the right circle tied the game again with 1:29 left in the period and was the first of two power play goals in the game for the Mallards.

After Gale scored his second period tally, Brett Robinson tied things for the Mallards then Matt Duffy and Mickey Lang on the power play pulled Quad City in front.

Mallards goaltender Neil Conway stopped 15 shots in the third period to seal the win. Kent Patterson stopped 36 of 41 shots in the loss for the Cutthroats. Denver's rookie goaltender is now 8-2-1 in his last 11 games.
