New Haven County Cutters News Release

The New Haven County Cutters head into the All-Star break on a high note, after beating the New Jersey Jackals 4-1 at Yale Field on Sunday afternoon and taking two out of three against their division rivals over the weekend.

Outside of the sixth inning, this was a game completely dominated by the starting pitching. The Cutters' Rolando Valles got the better of his New Jersey counterpart, Joel Bennett, giving up just one unearned run over eight innings, scattering eight hits and striking out six. . The Jackals lone run came in the top of the sixth and was created almost single-handedly by their third baseman Joe Jiannetti. He reached on a single, then stole second and third base and proceeded home on an error by Cutters third baseman Carlos Brackley.

Bennett would not be able to escape the Cutters' half of the sixth as effectively as Valles. Derrick Gibson, who doubled, was driven home by a clutch two-out single by Chas Terni to tie the game. Terni's base hit also moved Orlando Encarnacion to second base, who would cross home for the second run after Carlos Brackley's one bagger. The clutch hitting continued as Nick Hiter drove a double to the left center field warning track that chased Terni and Brackley home.

With a 4-1 lead, Valles cruised in the seventh and eighth inning before giving way to Mark Comolli who got the final three outs for the save.

The Cutters enter the All-Star break with a 2-1 second half record and are a game behind the Worcester Tornadoes. They are off for the next three days before traveling to Quebec for a four-game series against Les Capitales. The next Cutters' home game is on July 26, a doubleheader against the Can-Am Grays.
