July 5, 2007 - Canadian American League (Can-Am)
New Haven County Cutters News Release
WEST HAVEN, CT - The New Haven County Cutters took two games from the North Shore Spirit Thursday, winning the first of two seven-inning games 3-2 in 10 innings and the second game 6-3 to close out a three-game series at Historic Yale Field.
In game one the Cutters jumped in front to an early 2-0 lead over the Spirit thanks in large part to RF Jeremy Pickrel. Pickrel sacrificed home CF Ervin Alcantara in the bottom of the first after Alcantara's led the inning off with a walk. Pickrel would then come around to score in the third inning on an RBI single by 3B Junior Zamora after drawing a walk of his own with one out in the inning.
The Spirit would make things interesting by scoring a run in the 5th and in the 6th inning to tie the game, but left two men on base.
The Cutters had good scoring opportunities in the 8th and 9th innings as 1B Chris Gaskin and DH Orlando Encarnacion were left stranded after back to back singles in the 8th and LF Henri Stanley and SS Chas Terni were left stranded on back to back singles in the 9th.
The Cutters put the game away in the 10th as three straight hits By Zamora, Gaskin and Encarnacion off loser RHP Dennis Robinson (0-2) propelled the Cutters to victory. RHP Andy Weimer (2-3) pitched three solid innings in relief of RHP Bucky Kosyk for the victory.
In Game two, LHP Ryan Bonesio (3-4) faced North Shore fireballer RHP Chris Farley (6-2) in what was a pitchers duel through the first 4 innings.
Farely had allowed no runs, no hits and only one hit batsman before imploding in the 5th inning. Trailing 2-0, Zamora reached base on an error by the third baseman Mike Torres. That was followed by a key RBI double by Gaskin. Following a walk to Encarnacion, Farley fielded a bunt up the third baseline by 2B Matt Mercurio but threw well over the head of first baseman Luis Lopez allowing two more runs to score.
Mercurio who moved over to third on the error scored on a sacrifice fly by Alcantara.
Zamora added a monster two-run home run (7) to give the Cutters some insurance runs in the 6th, and after allowing a run in the 7th, Weimer, for the second straight game closed the door on North Shore sending the Cutters up to their weekend series with the Nashua Pride on a two game winning streak.
