Cutters shut out Grays to take series

July 27, 2005 - Canadian American League (Can-Am)
New Haven County Cutters News Release

Three New Haven County Cutters pitchers combined for a four-hit shutout of the Can-Am Grays and Derrick Gibson provided the only scoring offense of the game with a solo home run as the Cutters took the rubber match of the three game series over the league?s traveling team 1-0. It was the second Cutters victory in a row and leveled their record at 5-5.

Although the score would indicate a pitchers duel, neither pitcher displayed the sort of dominance associated with a classic performance. Both starters, the Cutters? Brad Whitworth, (seven walks) and the Grays? Tony Pierce (five walks) struggled with their command all night. But both were able to show a certain level of determination and grit as they continued to escape jam after jam.

Gibson capitalized on a mistake by Pierce in the third inning, turning on a high fast ball and depositing the ball deep into the upper parking lot of Yale Field. It was his second home run in as many games and tied him with Bill Peavey for the team lead with 10.

That lone run would prove to be enough for the Cutters. After six innings of four-hit baseball, Whitworth gave way to the bullpen. Andy Weimer pitched a perfect two innings of relief, followed by a one-two-three ninth from Mark Comolli for the save, his third since joining New Haven County.

The Cutters begin a four-game series with the Quebec Les Capitales on Thursday night at 7:05. It will be the second time this season Quebec has visited Yale Field. Tim Keinath (1-5) starts for New Haven County on Mardi Gras and Thirsty Thursday ($1 beers) at the ballpark.
