Williamsport Crosscutters News Release
The Pittsburgh Pirates announced that Tom Prince will be the new hitting coach in Williamsport for the 2004 season. The move was part of a shuffle of the Pirates minor league staff created when Double-A Altoona manager Dale Sveum was named the third base coach of the Boston Red Sox earlier this week.
Prince was signed as an undated free agent by the Pirates in 1984 and played 519 games in parts of 17 seasons in the major leagues with the Pirates, Dodgers, Phillies, Twins and Royals hitting 208 with 24 home runs and 140 RBI. Last season he appeared in a total of 32 major league games with the Twins and Royals.
Though he had invitations to major league spring training camps, Prince felt it was a good time to start the next phase of his baseball life. "As far as the spring invites go, I've gone that route. It was time to start my coaching career", said Prince. "I'm definitely excited to come to Williamsport and get started. I'll be learning to coach while the players are learning to play. I'm looking forward to getting back to the basics of baseball at the Class A level."
As part of the coaching shuffle Greg Briley who was originally assigned to the Crosscutters as hitting coach was promoted to be the hitting coach at Single-A Lynchburg. Pittsburgh then promoted former Crosscutters manager Tony Beasley (2001) from manager of Lynchburg to manager of Double-A Altoona. Jay Loviglio will replace Beasley as the Lynchburg manager.
The Crosscutters previously named Jeff Branson as manager and Ray Searage as pitching coach for the 2004 season. Williamsport begins defense of their NY-P Championship June 18 hosting the Brooklyn Cyclones at Historic Bowman Field.
